Looking forward not back

This article in Live Science suggests that one of the main reasons we see optical illusions is the fact that all our visual imputs suffer a short, approximately tenth of a second, delay. In order to compensate for this our visual cortex does not contsruct reality as it receives data but instead predicts reality as it is about to be.

We don't see what is or what was but what our brains think is actually going on in real time. This explains many optical illusions which present contradictory information about future shapes and movements.
